About The Lost Words Dictionary

Preserving the untranslatable beauty of human language

Our Mission

The Lost Words Dictionary is dedicated to discovering and celebrating the beautiful, untranslatable words that exist across the world’s languages — words that capture emotions, experiences, and concepts that have no direct equivalent in English.

Every culture has developed unique words to describe the human experience. From the Danish concept of hygge (a cozy sense of contentment) to the Japanese notion of komorebi (sunlight filtering through leaves), these words reveal how different cultures perceive and articulate the world around them.

What We Do

We research, curate, and present these linguistic treasures in a way that is accessible, educational, and inspiring. Each word entry includes its pronunciation, origin language, cultural context, and real-world usage — helping you not just learn the word, but truly understand the feeling behind it.

Why It Matters

Language shapes how we think and feel. By exploring words from other cultures, we expand our emotional vocabulary and deepen our understanding of the shared human experience. These words are waiting to be discovered by new audiences who can appreciate their beauty and wisdom.
